Vol. 367 No. 1

Written Answers. - Kerry Vocational Teachers.

172.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware that the number of teachers which the County Kerry Vocational Education Committee is allowed employ has been reduced from 191 to 174.3 during the past five years; and if he will make a statement on the matter, having regard to the effect which this reduction has on vocational education in Kerry.

The teaching staff allocations authorised for the past five school years in respect of full-time day courses conducted by the committee in question were as follows:

1981-82

:

160.6

1982-83

:

186.5

1983-84

:

180.5

1984-85

:

178.9

1985-86

:

178.0

The allocation in respect of such courses for the 1986-87 school year which issued to the committee on 27 March last was 174.3

The allocations were determined by reference to the pupil-teacher ratios applying to vocational education committees; the committee in question was accorded the same treatment as regards the allocation of teaching resources as other committees with comparable pupil populations.

Provision has been made for an appeals process and this can be availed of by the committee in specified circumstances. The latest date for the receipt of appeals is 30 May.
