Vol. 367 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Institute of Technology.

19.

asked the Minister for Education his future plans for the Dublin Institute of Technology; and when it is intended to implement them.

The Green Paper Partners in Education published in November 1985 proposed the establishment of the Dublin Institute of Technology which would incorporate the six third level colleges presently administered by the City of Dublin Vocational Education Committee.

My Department have just completed the consultation process with the various interested organisations in relation to the proposals in the Green Paper. The various views put forward are now being considered and I intend to bring proposals to the Government shortly in regard to what should now be done. I am aware that all of the interests concerned are anxious for early decisions and I will endeavour to expedite such decisions.

Is the Minister concerned about the manner in which the City of Dublin VEC have been running these third level colleges, and what problems arose?

I am not aware of any specific difficulties but I am sure these matters were referred to in the discussions that took place. The matter is now going before the Government — the Minister intends to put proposals before the Government shortly.

I understand the Minister expressed satisfaction with the development of these colleges. Why then does the Minister intend to change the structures and procedures, the manner in which the colleges are run, if they have been highly successful?

This was referred to in Partners in Education at considerable length. The consultation process with all interested parties has now been completed and the Minister expects to be able to put certain proposals to the Government with regard to what should be done arising from those consultations.

It is now 3.30 p.m. and we must move to questions nominated for priority.
