I am informed by the Garda authorities that at present there is a total of 147 neighbourhood watch schemes in operation in the Dublin metropolitan area, involving some 46,000 households. The areas where the schemes are operating are listed as follows. I understand that there is considerable enthusiasm for the schemes among the community and that a substantial increase in the number of households involved in schemes is expected in the coming months.
The schemes are being evaluated in order to establish as far as possible their effects on the crime rate and on relations between the community and the Garda Síochána. The preliminary indications are that the schemes are playing a valuable role in these areas.
