Where a contractor proposes to carry out improvement works to his own house he may qualify for a grant for the works provided he is a building contractor registered with the Revenue Commissioners. The work is done entirely by his employees, and details of each employee involved (including PRSI numbers) are submitted to the Department on completion of the works. This applicant was advised on 10 February last that on receipt of either (a) confirmation that he wishes to carry out the works on the foregoing basis or (b) details of the name, address and tax numbers, of another contractor who will carry out the works that the question of grant approval would be further considered.

Where a house is built under contract entered into before the 1 May 1985 a £2,000 grant is paid only where the applicant satisfies the Department that specified payments at 10 per cent VAT rate were made by him on or after the 1 May 1985 in accordance with the terms of the contract. As the person named had all specified payments made before he occupied his house in July 1983 the payment of a £1,000 grant was appropriate.
