Written Answers. - Wood Quay (Dublin) Artifacts.

18.

asked the Taoiseach if he will give details of the quantity of artifacts excavated from the Wood Quay site at present housed in the National Museum.

Over two million artifacts or artifact fragments were recovered from the excavations at the Wood Quay group of sites which includes Wood Quay, Fishamble Street, John's Lane and Winetavern Street. These are catalogued in 89 individual manuscript volumes with 103, 772 separate entries, many of which record groups of objects or fragments of objects. The information given does not include the many thousands of bone and environmental samples.

The National Museum is receiving financial assistance from the Exchequer to employ a team of researchers to prepare the results of the excavations for publication. Arrangements are already in hand in partnership with the Royal Irish Academy to publish the initial volumes in the projected series.
