Vol. 368 No. 1

Written Answers. - Food Company Take-over.

23.

Mr. Cowen

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if in relation to the takeover by Northern Foods of Beecham's 100 per cent interest in Batchelors Limited, which is subject to his approval, he will make it a condition of such approval that the present level of employment in Batchelors Factory in Banagher, County Offaly, will at least be maintained and if possible increased; and if he will also make such approval conditional on the FEOGA grants available for the development and modernisation of the Banagher plant being taken up and used for that purpose by the takeover company.

Limerick East): Upon notification under section 5 of the Mergers, Take-overs and Monopolies (Control) Act, 1978, of the proposed take-over concerning Batchelors (Ireland) Limited and Northern Foods plc., the proposal will be considered by me with particular reference to the scheduled criteria in the 1978 Act. These criteria include references to employment, the interests of shareholders and employees and any benefits likely to be derived from the proposed takeover. It is not possible to indicate what action may be taken in relation to the matter following consideration of the proposal.
