Vol. 368 No. 2

Written Answers. - Post Primary Examinations.

110.

asked the Minister for Education if he will give details in absolute and percentage terms in all cases for (a) each year since 1965 and (b) for all post primary state examinations the following: (i) the total number of pupils to sit for each of the examinations, (ii) the total number of pupils to sit for the Irish paper, and (iii) the results of each broken down by pass only, and pass with honours and failure.

The Deputy will find that the material she has requested under headings (i) and (ii) is contained in the Department's annual reports for all but two of the years in question. I should be glad to furnish the Deputy with any material under those headings which she does not find available in those reports.

As regards heading (iii) of the question, such data were published in the annual reports up to 1974. The concept of "pass" or "fail" in the examinations was then replaced by the issue of certificates showing the grades obtained in the individual subjects, and the Annual Reports since then give the percentage of candidates falling into certain grade ranges in the different subjects.
