Vol. 368 No. 3

Written Answers. - Portlaoise Psychiatric Services.

28.

asked the Minister for Health if his attention has been drawn to a report in the media (details supplied) of a recent meeting of Laois health committee, to the effect, that Health Minister, Barry Desmond, intends to close the psychiatric institution at Portlaoise and that amongst the mental hospitals to be closed down is Saint Fintans; and if he will comment on the matter in view of the widespread concern amongst patients, nurses, staff and the general public.

I have seen the newspaper report of the Laois local health committee meeting refered to by the Deputy. I understand from the Midland Health Board that the resident medical superintendent's comments were not reported accurately.

I should point out that I have no plans for the closure of St. Fintan's Hospital. The Midland Health Board has drawn up a comprehensive plan for the development of a community based psychiatric service for counties Laois and Offaly. This plan includes the provision of a psychiatric unit and day hospital at Portlaoise General Hospital. I have already approved the planning of purpose-built mental health centres at Tullamore and Birr which are an important component of the plan. In addition a detailed survey of in-patients in St. Fintan's was carried out last December and the number of patients with potential for rehabilitation to community residences has been established. I am delighted with the progress which is being made to implement the health board's plan. I trust that the resident medical superintendent and the Deputy will ensure that the record will be put straight at local level.
