Vol. 368 No. 8

Written Answers. - Artificial Eye Replacements.

172.

asked the Minister for Health if he will provide financial help for persons who need artificial eye replacements where eyes have had to be removed, as these replacements cost £300 and are beyond the capacity of most to pay for them.

The position regarding the cost of artificial eyes is that first eye implants are generally regarded as part of in-patient hospital treatment and the cost involved is met accordingly.

The cost of replacement of artificial eyes is met by health boards in respect of eligible persons, that is persons included on medical cards and persons deemed eligible for services on hardship grounds. Persons who find difficulty in meeting the cost of replacement artificial eyes should approach their local health board.
