Vol. 368 No. 8

Written Answers. - Rathangan (Kildare) Crime Rate.

239.

asked the Minister for Justice his views on the increase in crime in the Rathangan area of County Kildare, and if he will provide more support for the gardaí in that region.

I do not accept that there has been an increase in crime in the Rathangan area. The Garda authorities have informed me that 13 indictable crimes have been reported in the Rathangan Garda sub-district to date this year as compared with totals of 36 and 28 indictable crimes for 1984 and 1985, respectively.

As regards resources, the Garda authorities consider that the resources available at Rathangan station and the District Headquarters at Kildare are adequate to deal with crime in the Rathangan area. The authorities say that the police needs of the Rathangan area are being kept under review, having regard to overall resources and the many other demands on Garda services that arise in the Carlow/Kildare Garda Division.
