Vol. 368 No. 8

Written Answers. - Dublin Prostitution Problem.

240.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will make a statement regarding the widespread prostitution taking place in an area (details supplied) in Dublin 7; and if he will bring this matter to the attention of the Garda in order to ensure adequate protection for local residents from the associated harrassment and nuisance.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that they are aware of the problem and that they will continue to give the area as much attention as possible, having regard to the many other policing problems with which the gardaí have to contend.

241.

asked the Minister for Justice if he has any proposals for amending or updating the legislation relating to prostitution which dates from 1842; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Deputy may be aware that the Law Reform Commission's report on vagrancy and related offences (LRC-11 1985) contains recommendations in respect of most of the major offences concerned with prostitution. That report is being examined by my Department. Any proposals I may at a later stage have in relation to the subject matter of this question will be announced in the ordinary way as soon as possible.
