Vol. 368 No. 8

Written Answers. - County Wexford School Building Contracts.

259.

asked the Minister for Education when outstanding payments will be issued to a building contractor (details supplied) in County Wexford for a list of schools for which payment is long overdue; and if he will ensure that such payments are expedited as soon as possible.

Six of the projects referred to by the Deputy relate to national schools. In three of these cases the contracts are between the chairpersons of the schools' boards of management and the contractors. In one of these cases the grant payment in question was made recently. In another of these cases the position remains as outlined to the Deputy in my reply to his question on 16 May 1986. As regards the remaining chairperson's case, it will be necessary to carry out a further inspection to confirm that outstanding works have been satisfactorily completed before payment of the small balance in hands can be made.

The three remaining national schools contracts are between the contractor and my Department. In one of these cases, the final account has been examined and it is expected that a substantial payment will shortly be made. In another of these cases, the position remains as I outlined to the Deputy in my reply to his question on 16 May 1986. As regards the making good of certain defects in the remaining case, my Department will write to the contractor immediately explaining why it considers that the amount claimed is not payable.

The reply to the Deputy's question in so far as it relates to the Nangor Road vocational school remains the same as that given in reply to the Deputy's Question No. 198 taken on Tuesday, 20 May 1986.
