Vol. 368 No. 8

Written Answers. - Foras Forbartha Report on Timber-framed Construction.

86.

asked the Minister for the Environment the cost of the Foras Forbartha Report Inquiry into the use of timber frames in housing construction; its main conclusions; the Government response to these recommendations; the reason for the non-publication of these findings; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Reports such as the one referred to by the Deputy, which was commissioned by my Department from An Foras Forbartha, are not normally costed on an individual basis but are financed in the ordinary course from the annual grant-in-aid provided for An Foras by my Department.

I understand that the main conclusion reached in the report is that the short term prospects for timber-framed construction in Ireland are not good but that for a variety of reasons and depending on developments elsewhere, particularly in the UK, the use of timber-framed construction in this country should increase in the longer term.

My Department has indicated to An Foras that it has no objection to the publication of the report. The findings of the report will be taken into account when the building regulations are being made.
