Vol. 368 No. 10

Written Answers. - Portlaoise Industry.

36.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce his views on 28 workers in Portlaoise, County Laois, textile industry who lost jobs when the factory closed its doors on 5 June 1986; if he will take steps to have this factory reopened, or an alternative industry funded for the displaced workers; if he will ask the IDA to concern themselves in this urgent problem in a town which already has excessive unemployment; and if he will make a statement in the matter.

Limerick East): I regret the loss of employment which has arisen at the textile factory in question in Portlaoise. I understand that the IDA is intensifying its efforts, in co-operation with the owners of the factory, to find a suitable replacement project.

The IDA recently arranged an industrial promotion seminar in Portlaoise and has also provided a walk-in centre in the town with a view to attracting new industry to the area.
