Vol. 369 No. 1

Written Answers. - Defence Forces Equipment.

214.

asked the Minister for Defence the plans, if any, he has to purchase tracked armour, more modern artillery, air defence weapons, combat aircraft and naval vessels for the Permanent Defence Forces; whether these areas of essential equipment need updating and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Subject to the financial constraints imposed on expenditure by my Department there is an on-going programme for the provision of modern equipment for the Permanent Defence Forces. Improvements in particular areas are made to ensure the capability of the force to carry out the various tasks imposed on it. Specific items of equipment have been acquired in recent years in a number of the areas indicated by the Deputy and all will continue to receive consideration in the context of the allocation of financial resources.
