Vol. 369 No. 1

Written Answers. - Establishment of Plantations.

225.

asked the Minister for Tourism, Fisheries and Forestry whether he has considered introducing more variety into the establishment of plantations with a view to improving their scenic aspects.

My Department is very conscious of the impact of forestry on the landscape and, when establishing and managing plantations, takes this into account. However, regard must also be had to such other factors as the location, setting and size of the plantation, the nature of the soil, the growth potential, edge effects etc. The potential of the site frequently limits the variety of species that can be planted but whatever opportunities present themselves for good landscaping are availed of by the Department as far as possible within the limit of such constraints and prudent silvicultural practices. Indeed, my Department has in the past been complimented in many areas for well-executed landscape work. I should add that concern with the quality of the landscape is also reflected in the content of training courses for forestry staff and, when required, specialist staff are available to advise forest managers on landscaping.
