Vol. 369 No. 1

Written Answers. - Radiation Levels.

230.

asked the Minister for Tourism, Fisheries and Forestry the danger, if any, which exists because of radioactive levels in woodcock, snipe and migratory ducks due to the Chernobyl disaster and if he will make a statement on the matter.

234.

asked the Minister for Tourism, Fisheries and Forestry if he is aware of the anxiety regarding the possible effects of radiation on species of wildlife, and if he proposed to take any action on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 230 and 234 together.

Certain huntable species of game birds including those named are known to migrate here from areas in Northern Europe. My Department has made arrangements with the Nuclear Energy Board to have tests carried out urgently on a random sample of these birds according as they arrive in this country in order to assess the levels of radiation in them. I understand that the board will issue a statement on their findings at an early date.
