Vol. 369 No. 1

Written Answers. - National Debt.

267.

asked the Minister for Finance the total national debt to date; the amount of foreign borrowings; the amount of borrowings under the domestic market vis-à-vis 1984 and 1985; at what periods of the year borrowings were made both in foreign and domestic markets; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

At end-September 1986, the most recent date for which information is available, the national debt is estimated to have been £23,290 million of which £9,827 million is accumulated Exchequer foreign debt.

Total net borrowing operations by the Exchequer on the domestic market (including small savings) came to £1,075 million in 1984 and £1,374 million in 1985. In the first nine months of 1986, funding from the domestic market was £553 million. A quarterly breakdown of the domestic and foreign funding of the Exchequer borrowing requirement since the beginning of 1984 is provided for the Deputy's information in the attached table. I do not propose to make any further statement on the matter.
