Vol. 369 No. 1

Written Answers. - Incidence of AIDS Virus.

277.

asked the Minister for Health the total number of persons in Ireland to date who have contracted AIDS; the total number who have died from AIDS in Ireland to date; the estimated numbers of carriers infected with the AIDS virus; and the total number of persons it is projected will suffer from AIDS in Ireland by 1990.

There have been 12 cases of AIDS in Ireland to date, of which seven have died (two of these seven cases died abroad). The latest figures show 502 positive tests for HTLV - III anti-bodies. All these positive cases have come from the identified at-risk groups.

Ireland has had a relatively small number of AIDS cases to date. The USA experience is that cases double every seven to nine months but a similar pattern is yet to emerge here. Accordingly, while the number of cases will continue to increase the potential margin of error in any projection to 1990 would be very great.
