Vol. 369 No. 1

Written Answers. - Drug Trafficking.

278.

asked the Minister for Health when he proposes to introduce legislation so that property and money held by suspected drug dealers can be seized and confiscated in view of the fact that such legislation was promised before the summer recess.

My Department, in consultation with the Attorney General's office, is currently examining the possibility of introducing new legislation, which would provide for the seizure and confiscation of the assets of drug traffickers.

As the Deputy will appreciate, this type of legislation is quite complex and has constitutional implications. While it is not possible at present to give a date for the introduction of this necessary piece of legislation I can assure the Deputy that I regard it as a high priority and will introduce it at the earliest possible date.
