Vol. 369 No. 1

Written Answers. - Free Fuel and Electricity Allowances.

376.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare her views on extending the free fuel and electricity allowance to all long term recipients of social welfare payments as recommended by the report of the Commission on Social Welfare.

All of the recommendations of the Commission on Social Welfare are being examined at present and proposals will be put to the Government in due course. The financial implications of the proposals will be a major constraint on the timing and the extent to which the commission's recommendations can be implemented. In this connection the estimated cost in 1986 terms of extending the free fuel and electricity allowances to all long term recipients of social welfare pensions and allowances as recommended by the Commission on Social Welfare is £61 million.
