Vol. 369 No. 1

Written Answers. - Storm Damage Compensation.

377.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if it is his intention to give a grant to compensate farmers in County Sligo who have suffered heavy losses as a result of recent storms.

The EC Commission has indicated that it intends to propose assistance by way of increased headage payments for farmers in disadvantaged areas and a formal proposal to this effect is expected shortly. In addition the Government has agreed to carry the exchange risk on additional Euro-currency funds to help farmers seriously financially affected by the exceptional weather conditions.

Furthermore the Government has announced that the situation of farmers in river valleys affected by repeated flooding and in wet lands most severely affected by the heavy rainfall would be reviewed. That review is now being completed.
