asked the Minister for Justice the number of larcenies (group 3) recorded, and the number detected in: (a) the country as a whole, and (b) the Dublin metropolitan area for the period ending 30 September 1986.

In the first eight months of this year — the latest period for which figures are available — a total of 32,652 group 3 offences was recorded in the country as a whole, of which 9,779 have so far been detected. In the Dublin metropolitan area 20,838 such offences were recorded and 5,097 have so far been detected. These figures are provisional at this stage.

asked the Minister for Justice (a) the number of armed robberies, (b) the amount of money taken and (c) the amount recovered, for the first nine months of 1986, and if he will make a statement on the matter.

For the first eight months of this year — the latest period for which figures are available — the Garda have recorded a total of 462 armed robberies and armed aggravated burglaries. The total value of cash and other goods involved is estimated to be approximately £2.5 million, of which approximately £275,000 so far has been recovered. These figures are provisional at this stage.

As I have said in response to previous similar parliamentary questions and in the course of debates in the House, the Garda authorities have introduced certain measures to deal with the problem of armed raids. I do not propose to give details of these measures because firstly they are police operational matters and secondly because to do so could be counter productive.
