Vol. 369 No. 1

Written Answers. - County Wexford Building Contractor.

424.

asked the Minister for Education when outstanding payments will be made to a building contractor (details supplied) in County Wexford in respect of the various school projects which he is working on for his Department.

The contractor referred to by the Deputy is involved in a number of national schools building contracts.

In four cases the contracts are between the contractor and the chairpersons of the boards of management of the schools. In one of these cases, all grant moneys on foot of building certificates issued have been paid to the chairperson. In two of these cases further grant payments are being processed and it is hoped that these can be made within the next fortnight. In the last of these cases, the mechanical and electrical consultants have confirmed that certain defects have been made good, and it is now possible to release grant moneys which had been held on foot of these defects. Actual payment will, it is hoped, be made within the next fortnight.

In three cases the contracts are between the contractor and my Department. In one of these cases the final payment is at present being processed and it is expected that payment will be made in about three weeks time. In a second case, a number of defects have been notified to the contractor and until these have been made good it will not be possible to make the final payment. In the third case, there is a difference between the contractor's figures and those of the Department. This is being looked into urgently with a view to finalising the matter.

The contractor in question was also employed on the construction of the new vocational school at Nangor Road, Clondalkin. The County Dublin VEC was the client in this case. The final payment in respect of this contract was made to the VEC on 1 October 1986.
