Vol. 369 No. 1

Written Answers. - County Donegal Schools.

439.

asked the Minister for Education the up-to-date position regarding the proposed extension to Ballydevitt national school, County Donegal.

Tenders have been invited and received for the building of a new national school at Ballydevitt, County Donegal. My Department at the earliest opportunity will be communicating with the school authorities concerning the placing of a contract.

440.

asked the Minister for Education the up-to-date position regarding the proposed extension to Dore national school, County Donegal.

My Department has the necessary arrangement in hands to invite tenders for the proposed extension to Dore national school, County Donegal. I cannot be precise as to the exact day the normal advertisements will appear in the national newspapers, but it will be at a very early date.

441.

asked the Minister for Education the up-to-date position regarding the proposed post-primary school for Arranmore Island; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The present position is that a schedule of accommodation for the proposed new school has been agreed between my Department and the County Donegal Vocational Education Committee, which will be the client body for the school.

The committee is actively pursuing the acquisition of a suitable site for the school.

442.

asked the Minister for Education his plans to rationalise post-primary educational facilities in the Ballyshannon-Bundoran areas of County Donegal; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have given long and serious consideration to all the various factors involved in this matter. I have decided that the interests of the post-primary pupils of the catchment area (present and future) can best be served by:—

—the creation of a single community school for approximately 800 pupils in Ballyshannon, incorporating the three existing post-primary schools

—retention of the post-primary school in Bundoran, subject to the establishment of a new management structure when the Sisters of St. Louis withdraw in 1989

—retention of the existing "joint catchment area" provision.

My Department has conveyed this decision to the management authorities of the schools concerned.

443.

asked the Minister for Education the extra accommodation provided in the recent extension to Derrybeg national school, County Donegal; and its estimated cost.

My Department has grant aided four classrooms and a general purposes room by way of extension to Derrybeg national school, County Donegal, in 1985.

In the case of individual grant aided projects, cost details have always been regarded as confidential between the school authorities and my Department, and it is not the practice to disclose such information.
