Vol. 369 No. 1

Written Answers. - County Sligo Employment.

56.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the number of new jobs created in County Sligo during 1986; and the prospects there are for increasing the number of manufacturing jobs in Sligo in view of the number of job losses in recent years and the large amount of vacant factory space that exists; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Limerick East): I am informed by the Industrial Development Authority that information on the number of new jobs created in manufacturing industry in County Sligo in 1986 will not be available until January, 1987.

So far in 1986, the Industrial Development Authority has approved grant assistance for 16 small firms in County Sligo in respect of the establishment or expansion of manufacturing operations. These projects are expected to provide 60 new jobs. Also, the IDA has recently approved grant assistance to Tractech Limited, who are investing £1 million in a major expansion which is expected to result in the creation of 25 extra jobs in Sligo over the next two years, with further job opportunities later. In addition, negotiations are taking place between the IDA and a number of overseas and indigenous companies in the county relating to the expansion of existing projects which, if proceeded with, will also provide significant additional employment.

The IDA will continue to promote all vacant factory space and land in the county for suitable industrial projects.
