Vol. 369 No. 2

Written Answers. - Severely Handicapped Areas.

120.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether there is a current application before the EC by the Irish Government to have the severely handicapped areas extended.

As was announced on 28 August, the Government has decided to initiate a further review of the disadvantaged areas for the purpose of extending the boundaries and reclassifying existing areas. The position in the different areas throughout the country will be most carefully considered in this review. Preliminary discussions have already taken place with officials of the EC Commission. A formal proposal will be lodged with the Commission as soon as all the necessary statistical and other supporting data have been prepared.
