Vol. 369 No. 3

Written Answers. - CSIT Athletic Championships.

40.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he is aware of the fact that at the CSIT championships which were held in Terni, Italy, on 6 September, 1986, an Irish team of athletes were refused permission to display the Irish flag, as did the other ten nations participating in the parade, and the Irish team were not allowed to participate in the games even though they were registered in advance; the action he intends to take; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Representations which I have received concerning the recent events in Turin have made me aware of the difficulties encountered by the Irish athletes at the CSIT championships. As neither the Department of Foreign Affairs nor the Irish Embassy in Rome were contacted by the organisers or by the Irish team regarding their difficulties, the question of an official intervention could not have arisen at the time. Since the return home of the NACAI team, the issues to which the Deputy refers have been discussed at a meeting on 15 October between Mr. Seán Barrett, TD, Minister for Sport, and the officers of NACAI.
