Vol. 369 No. 4

Written Answers. - ICTU's Proposed National Understanding.

123.

asked the Minister for Labour if, in view of his welcome for the statesmanlike proposals of the spokesman for the trade union movement for the introduction of a tripartite arrangement for a national understanding on salaries, employment, etc., he is prepared to initiate discussions on these proposals with a view to creating orderly and sensible structures in an area which is vital to the economic and social welfare of the country.

The general secretary of the Federated Workers' Union of Ireland has put forward the idea of a five year rolling plan covering pay, taxation, jobs and unemployment which would be worked out on a tripartite basis between Government, employers and trade unions. As the Deputy may be aware I have already indicated my willingness to meet the ICTU to discuss this proposal which I feel merits further consideration.
