Vol. 369 No. 4

Written Answers. - Clonmel (Tipperary) Drainage Scheme.

21.

asked the Minister for the Environment the up-to-date position concerning the implementation of the Clonmel main drainage scheme; if provision is being made for an interceptor sewer, repairs to the quayside road way and quayside wall; the approximate overall cost involved; the way in which the project is to be funded, especially in respect of grants in his Department or from EC sources; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Contract documents for the main sewers, including an interceptor sewer, are under consideration in my Department. Contract documents for other parts of the scheme including the treatment works and pumping station are being prepared by Clonmel Corporation. No decision on the project can be made until all the contract documents have been received and examined in my Department. The documents as submitted include provision for certain works to the quayside road way and to the quayside wall. These will be considered in the context of the overall proposed scheme.

The proposed scheme if approved, would be expected to be financed in the normal way by subsidisable loans from the local loans fund; it would also be submitted to the Department of Finance for consideration for EC financing in the normal way.

The Deputy will appreciate that it would not be appropriate for me to disclose details of estimated costs at this juncture as this might prejudice any subsequent tendering process.
