Vol. 369 No. 4

Written Answers. - Laois Road Grants.

28.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will consider making additional grant aid available to Laois County Council for the purpose of carrying out road improvements in the disadvantaged areas of Luggacurren and the Slievebloom, as the road network in both areas has seriously deteriorated.

I understand that most of the roads in the areas in question are county roads.

Primary responsibility for the planning and execution of improvement works on those county roads rests with the local authority concerned. However, because of my concern about the county road network, I introduced a new scheme of grants for county road strengthening in July of this year and £5 million was allocated to local authorities for this purpose in 1986. A grant of £80,000 was notified to Laois County Council under that scheme.
