Vol. 369 No. 4

Written Answers. - Electoral Register.

30.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he is aware of defects and omissions in the electoral register produced each year; if he will consider having the register published at a different time; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware that despite continuing efforts by registration authorities to achieve greater accuracy in the preparation of the annual register of electors, errors continue to occur. I am considering improvements in the registration process with a view to ensuring that as far as possible nobody will be deprived of a vote by the occurrence of such errors.

As to the time for preparing the register, it is generally accepted that the period appointed for public scrutiny of the draft; which includes the Christmas holidays, is not the most suitable time for this purpose. This aspect is also being examined.
