Vol. 369 No. 4

Written Answers. - Fodder Supplies.

102.

(Limerick West) asked the Minister for Agriculture the national situation as regards supplies of silage and hay for winter feed; if there is a risk of shortage in certain areas; and, if so, the action being taken to relieve the shortage.

In view of the unfavourable weather conditions which prevailed throughout the summer my Department in collaboration with ACOT has been monitoring the fodder situation on a continuing basis. Due to exceptionally fine weather during September and much of October, considerable quantities of fodder were saved and the overall supply position is now adequate for a normal winter. There may be local deficits in some areas but for the most part these areas do in any event have deficits even in normal years.
