Vol. 369 No. 5

Written Answers. - Copper Tubing Industry.

40.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will appoint a consultant to report on the viability of maintaining employment in the copper tubing industry prior to the proposed closure of Irish Metal Industries Limited, Galway, the only copper tubing factory operating in this country.

I am aware of the announcement by Irish Metal Industries Limited that they propose to cease production at Galway by the middle of next year. I have been in touch with the Industrial Development Authority and understand that they are already examining the matter and are prepared to assist by any means open to them, e.g. through a feasibility study grant, any bona fide party wishing to examine the viability of producing copper tubing in Ireland.
