Vol. 369 No. 6

Written Answers. - Advance Factories.

48.

(Limerick West) asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he intends to refurbish any of the vacant factories in County Limerick; and, if so, if he will give details.

Limerick East): I have been advised that during 1986 IDA will carry out maintenance work amounting to £130,000 on its factories in the Annacotty industrial estate in Limerick. IDA has no plans for carrying out any further maintenance to its vacant factories in County Limerick in the immediate future.

Shannon Development have been implementing a refurbishment programme for large industry advance factories in the mid-west and will spend £280,000 this year in refurbishing three factories in Newcastle West and one in Kilmallock.

49.

(Limerick West) asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce (a) the number of advance factories which are vacant in County Limerick; (b) the location of these factories; (c) the prospects of them being occupied in the near future; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Limerick East): I assume the Deputy is referring to the Limerick county (excluding Limerick city) area. The following is the information requested by the Deputy.

Note: In some cases these factories are divided into sub-units, while the 11 "factories" in Annacotty are part of the one building. The above represents advance factories promoted by the IDA and SFADCo.

(c) Both the IDA and SFADCo. are actively promoting these factories. In Annacotty five of the factories are either approved or reserved for occupation. In the case of Castletroy Business Park 9,700 sq. ft. of this factory is approved for the recently announced project by the Institute for Scientific Information. The balance of the 20,000 sq. ft. will be available for the institute when necessary.

50.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the plans, if any, the IDA have for the setting up of an industry in the new 24,000 square feet advance factory in Longford town which is idle for the past three years.

Limerick East): I have been informed by the Industrial Development Authority that it has been actively promoting the advance factory in question for industrial purposes and that negotiations are in fact at present under way aimed at securing a project for the factory.
