Vol. 369 No. 6

Written Answers. - Conduct of BIM.

81.

asked the Minister for Tourism, Fisheries and Forestry if he will make inquiries for BIM regarding a company (details supplied) or their clients; (1) the number of applications submitted by the said company to the board for approval; (2) how long it took to make a decision on the applications; (3) the number of applications refused; (4) the reason the company was not notified by BIM of the decision; and (5) if immediate inquiries by senior officials of his Department will review the conduct of BIM.

I have made inquiries of An Bord Iascaigh Mhara and the following is the position: no applications have been received from the said company. Applications for financial assistance under the marine credit plan must be submitted by intending purchasers of fishing vessels.

In the period from March 1981 to date some 14 applications for financial assistance from clients or prospective clients of the said company were received by BIM. Of these, two were approved for grant facilities and one has been approved in principle; three applications are under consideration awaiting information from the applicants; four applications were not followed up by the applicants and four were not successful.

The length of time taken to process applications varies from case to case and depends largely on the time taken by the applicant to supply necessary information to the board.

I do not propose to set up an inquiry as suggested by the Deputy.
