There has been substantial regional airport development in recent years for which Exchequer grants of over £12 million have been provided. The establishment of further regional airports or the extension of existing ones is a matter for local initiative, subject to compliance with the technical requirements of my Department and planning legislation.
No new Exchequer grant commitment for regional airports has been given since 1984. A detailed review of policy in this area is being carried out in conjunction with the preparation of a White Paper on Transport Policy.
As the departmental Estimates for 1987 have not yet been settled I am unable to indicate what provision will be made for regional airport grants in that year.
