Vol. 369 No. 9

Written Answers. - Neo-Natal Screening.

24.

asked the Minister for Health whether he is aware that a research unit at the Children's Hospital in Sheffield have discovered an hereditary enzyme deficiency in babies which can have the effect that they do not get enough carbohydrates which can result in the brain not getting the energy it requires to function and that this lack of carbohydrate could be one of the causes of what has commonly been known as cot deaths; and in the light of these findings he will ensure that the necessary neo-natal screening of all babies born in this country is carried out to detect whether they suffer from such enzyme deficiency.

I am aware of the research referred to by the Deputy. I am advised that the necessary tests to detect this deficiency are not as yet appropriate for application in a mass screening programme of neonates.
