Vol. 369 No. 9

Written Answers. - Iran-Iraq War.

47.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will use his influence at every international platform to bring about a cease-fire in the protracted Iran-Iraq War.

The Government strongly favour efforts to bring about a just and peaceful solution of the conflict between Iran and Iraq which has continued for over six years. Together with our partners in the Twelve, we have highlighted our concerns about this war on a number of occasions in the course of the present year. In particular, as I mentioned in my statement to the current session of the United Nations General Assembly, the Twelve have sought to lend their collective weight to efforts by the UN Secretary General and others to assist a resolution of this conflict. In this connection, they have appealed to both parties to respect Resolution 582 adopted unanimously by the UN Security Council earlier this year which called, inter alia, for a cessation of hostilities and for the settlement of the dispute by peaceful means. These considerations were reiterated most recently in the course of the general debate at the UN General Assembly on 23 September 1986 in the statement, delivered in his Presidency capacity on behalf of all of the Twelve, by the British Foreign Secretary. The Government will continue, both nationally and in co-operation with our partners, to urge a peaceful settlement of this tragic conflict.
