Vol. 369 No. 9

Written Answers. - ACC Lending.

57.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is satisfied that the new policy of the Agricultural Credit Corporation of switching emphasis from agricultural lending to general banking business is in the interest of the agricultural sector; and, if not, the action he proposes to take.

The ACC's lending activity is restricted by law to the agricultural sector. The Government are at present considering legislative proposals which, through a widening of ACC's lending base, would benefit ACC's traditional borrowers by generating an increase in the volume of ACC's lower-cost deposits. Under these proposals ACC's role as lenders to the agriculture sector would continue to be the dominant one.
