Vol. 369 No. 11

Written Answers. - Gaelic Games.

42.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he is aware that the playing of gaelic games is not allowed in prisons in the North of Ireland; if he will raise this matter at the next Inter-Government talks; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

My information is that currently gaelic football is permitted in an area of the Maze Prison.

The question of facilities for Irish cultural activities in prisons in Northern Ireland, including GAA games, was raised with the British authorities several times in recent years.

Since the Anglo-Irish Agreement came into effect cultural and identity issues of concern to nationalists, including facilities available to prisoners have been the subject of ongoing discussions within the Inter-Government Conference.
