asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the number of people in industrial employment in Galway city in 1984, 1985, and 1986; the average figure of people on the unemployment register in each of those years; the number of new industrial jobs created in Galway in each of those years and the number of industrial jobs lost during the same period.

Limerick East): I am informed by the Industrial Development Authority that, on the basis of surveys conducted by them in November of each year, the information requested by the Deputy in respect of manufacturing employment and new industrial jobs created and lost in Galway City (including Shantalla and Ballyban) is as follows:

The 1986 survey is being undertaken at present and the results will not be available until January 1987.

I am informed by the Central Statistics Office that the average number of people on the unemployment register in Galway County Borough during the years 1984 and 1985 were 2,830 and 3,167 respectively. To date, in 1986, the number has averaged 3,261.
