Vol. 369 No. 11

Written Answers. - Defence Forces Private Security Work.

107.

asked the Minister for Defence if he is aware that some serving members of the Defence Forces are alleged to be hired on part time basis by a company (details supplied); that another company who employ trade union workers and observe union company agreements have lost contracts in Galway and Limerick to the first company because of this practice; that the second company have had to lay off 40 workers because of this practice; if such serving members of the Defence Forces are in contravention of a directive on this matter from the office of the Adjutant General; if he will have this matter investigated with a view to ending such activities, and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Officers and men of the Permanent Defence Force, as well as reservists on permanent service, are forbidden to organise or engage in private security work with commercial firms or State-sponsored Bodies.

The question of members of the Defence Forces working on a part time basis for Messrs. Connaught Security Limited is being investigated and I will advise the Deputy of the outcome as soon as it is known.
