Vol. 369 No. 11

Written Answers. - National Cattle Herd.

150.

asked the Minister for Agriculture the steps he proposes to take to increase our national cattle herd.

154.

(Limerick West) asked the Minister for Agriculture if he intends introducing proposals to help increase the production of beef cattle in areas outside the disadvantaged areas; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 150 and 154 together. In 1987 I intend to continue the £70 payment on beef cows in the disadvantaged areas which I introduced this year and to seek the continuation of the EC suckler cow and calf premium schemes. These measures should provide worthwhile incentives to farmers and help increase cattle numbers both inside and outside the disadvantaged areas.

The EC suckler cow scheme and the EC calf premium scheme applies in all parts of the country including those parts outside the disadvantaged areas. Payment rates are £27.04 per cow and £7.36 per calf at present and the schemes are worth about £11 million and £13 million respectively to Ireland for 1986.
