Vol. 369 No. 11

Written Answers. - Milk Cessation Scheme.

155.

(Limerick West) asked the Minister for Agriculture in regard to the European Communities milk cessation scheme if he can now state the extent to which Irish dairy producers will avail themselves of the possibility of reducing milk production by 2 per cent under the first part of the scheme; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Applications from producers for the voluntary surrender of their quotas under this scheme at present total approximately 10.5 million gallons out of the quantity required of approximately 23 million gallons. It is not possible to state precisely what additional quotas will be voluntarily surrendered before the new closing date of 31 December 1986. However, if the total amount applied for by that date is less than the quantity required under the scheme the balance will have to be obtained by way of compulsory cuts in quotas of other producers.
