Vol. 369 No. 12

Written Answers. - Blarney (Cork) Garda Station.

19.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is aware of the on-going downgrading of the Garda station at Blarney, County Cork; the action he proposes to take to redress the situation; and if he will state whether the station will be moved to the Bord Telecom complex.

The position is that, arising from a re-organisation of the Garda district stucture in Cork east division in June 1985 the district headquarters was moved from Blarney to the new Garda premises at Gurranabraher. This change involved the transfer of the district headquarters staff only, and did not affect the operational strength at Blarney. In fact, the operational strength at Blarney has been increased by two members since then. I am informed by the Garda authorities that they consider that the present policing arrangements for Blarney are adequate and that there is no question of any reduction in the level of policing in the area.

The building at present occupied by the gardaí at Blarney is considered to be unsuitable for the needs of a modern Garda station and the Office of Public Works are examining the feasibility of providing new Garda station accommodation in premises formerly occupied by Telecom Éireann in Blarney.
