Vol. 369 No. 12

Written Answers. - Satellite Television.

49.

asked the Minister for Communications if he is aware of the nature and quality of television programmes and presentations which will follow on the introduction of satellite television via cable link; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

It is technically possible for anybody with suitable equipment, regardless of whether he is connected to a cable system, to receive satellite delivered television programmes just as many people already receive BBC and ITV television programmes off air. I have no statutory responsibility for the content of any of these services. They are subject to the regulatory regime of the country of origin.

I understand that the satellite services available offer a mix of material already broadcast on terrestrial services plus specialist channels devoted for example to sport, films, children's programmes and popular music. It will be a matter for subscribers to cable television systems to make up their own minds regarding the content of these services and to make their views known to the cable operator.
