Vol. 370 No. 1

Written Answers. - Disadvantaged Areas.

59.

asked the Minister for the Environment in view of the fact that the local improvement schemes can only be done in disadvantaged areas, when it is likely that the local authorities will be notified of the recent extension of these.

The local improvements scheme relates to farm road projects eligible for EC aid under the western package. The western package includes the western region of Ireland designated as less favoured under EC Regulation 75/272. In 1985, designated areas were extended under Regulation 85/350. Arising from the first review of the package by the Department of Agriculture, the EC Commission is considering the question of the application of the package to the additional areas designated in 1985. If the Commission agrees to this proposal, the local authorities concerned will then be notified to this effect.
