Vol. 370 No. 1

Written Answers. - County Kildare Schools Extensions.

102.

asked the Minister for Education when it is hoped to complete the extension to Clogherinkoe national school, County Kildare, already in progress since 1984; and the reasons for the delay in sanctioning the provision of an additional classroom.

The original contractor employed for the extension of Clogherinkoe national school, County Kildare, failed to complete all of the works. It was the intention to have outstanding works carried out in conjunction with the provision of a fourth classroom which my Department had agreed in principle to grant-aid. There has, however, been a decline in the number of pupils attending the school and it would appear that the additional classroom may not now be required in the long term. A re-assessment of the enrolment projections is being carried out. It is, however, proposed to have the outstanding works which came within the scope of the original contract carried out as soon as possible, independently of the outcome of the re-assessment referred to.

asked the Minister for Education the current position with regard to the provision of an extension and facilities at Ballymore Eustace national school, Naas, County Kildare; if he will indicate the full extent of the extra facilities to be provided, the cost of this, the local contribution, and the remaining stages in the process yet to be decided; if he can indicate the likely starting date for the works; and if so the date.

My Department are at present awaiting the submission by the school authorities of Ballymore Eustace national school, Naas, County Kildare of the working drawings for the proposed extension to the school. The project comprises the provision of two new classrooms and ancillary accommodation, and the conversion of the existing domestic science room to a general purposes area. The cost of school building projects to be grant-aided is regarded as confidential information in individual cases, and it is not my Department's practice to disclose it. The processes still to be pursued prior to the starting of the project are: the completion of the tender documentation, the invitation of tenders and the placing of a contract. I am not, however, at this stage in a position to project a likely time schedule for these processes.

asked the Minister for Education the present position with regard to the provision of an extension to and extra facilities at Castledermot national school, County Kildare, the full extent of the facilities to be provided; the cost of these; and the likely time schedule and processes still to be pursued prior to the starting date for the project.

The proposals originally approved in principle to be grant-aided by my Department for Castledermot national school, County Kildare, were the provision of an extension which would give the school nine classrooms overall. Because of the constraints of the site and the educational requirements of the scheme, it was necessary for my Department to propose a two-storey design for a proposed extension of two classrooms. The local authority refused to grant permission for the development and an appeal against the decision was also rejected. My Department's professional advisers are at present considering possible revisions of their design approach, and also have under consideration proposals submitted from a design consultant engaged independently by the school authorities. My Department have noted that enrolments have declined at the school, and are having projections of enrolments reassessed with a view to establishing whether all of the accommodation proposed in the extension may be required in the long term. The outcome of the reassessment will be communicated to the school authorities as soon as possible. Obviously at this stage I am not in a position to indicate precisely the extent of the facilities which may eventually be approved for grant aid. As to costs, information in this regard in relation to school building projects which are to be grant-aided is regarded as confidential, and it is not my Department's practice to disclose it in individual cases. I am not in a position in this case because of the complexities of the scheme either to indicate the processes still to be pursued, or a likely time schedule for their completion.

asked the Minister for Education the present position with regard to the provision of an extension and extra facilities to Allen national school, County Kildare; the full extent of the facilities to be provided; the cost of these; and the likely time schedule and processes still to be pursued prior to the starting date for the project.

My Department have now received evidence that the title to the site on which it is proposed to build the new national school at Allen, County Kildare is satisfactory and are about to seek agreement with the school authorities on a suitable local contribution towards the cost. The accommodation to be provided comprises six classrooms, a general purposes area and the usual ancillary accommodation. The cost of school building projects to be grant-aided is regarded as confidential information in individual cases, and it is not my Department's practice to disclose it. Subject to a satisfactory outcome to the local contribution negotiations, the processes still to be pursued prior to the starting of the project are the preparation of tender documentation, the invitation of tenders and placing of a contract. I am not, however, at this stage in a position to project a likely time schedule for these processes.

The outcome will be conveyed to the school authorities as soon as possible. The overall accommodation envisaged for the school is four classrooms, a general purposes area and the usual ancillary accommodation. The cost of school building projects to be grant-aided is regarded as confidential information in individual cases, and it is not my Department's practice to disclose it. The processes still to be pursued prior to the starting of the project are: reaching agreement with the school authorities on the scope of the work to be undertaken, negotiation of a suitable local contribution, the preparation of tender documentation, the invitation of tenders and the placing of a contract. I am not, however, at this stage in a position to project a likely time schedule for these processes.

The processes still to be pursued in this project prior to its being started would be: the approval subject to any necessary revisions of the sketch scheme, negotiation of a suitable local contribution, the formal sanctioning of a grant, preparation of the tender documention, the invitation of tenders and the placing of a contract. The cost of school building projects to be grant-aided is regarded as confidential information in individual cases and it is not my Department's practice to disclose it. The processes still to be pursued in this project prior to its being started would be: the approval subject to any necessary revisions of a sketch scheme, negotiation of a suitable local contribution, the formal sanctioning of a grant, preparation of the tender documentation, the invitation of tenders and the placing of a contract.
