Vol. 370 No. 1

Written Answers. - Work Experience Programme.

118.

asked the Minister for Labour if the duration of the work experience programme for a person (details supplied) in County Wexford could be extended beyond the six months period in view of the fact that her entitlement for unemployment benefit would be at a higher rate of payment than the current level of pay with the work experience programme.

The work experience programme administered by the National Manpower Service of my Department is designed to help young people who have left the educational system and who have not yet secured their first job. Under the programme, participants are placed, with the co-operation of employers, in a variety of workplaces and obtain real experience of the world of work. Each programme lasts for 26 weeks and participants are paid a weekly allowance of £34.50. In order to ensure that the maximum number of young persons can benefit from the scheme, no programme is extended beyond the 26 weeks period. This ensures the best possible use of the funds available and also ensures that suitable work experience places are shared among the young people available.

I regret that, in view of all the circumstances, it is not possible for me to extend the work experience programme in which the young person, about whom the Deputy asks, is participating. The Department of Social Welfare operates a scheme under which it is possible for unemployed persons to undertake voluntary work without affecting their entitlement to unemployment benefit or assistance. This scheme may be of help in this case. Inquiries can be made at any employment exchange or office and I have passed details to the Deputy.

I should like to assure the person in question that the National Manpower Service will make every effort to help her find employment suitable to her needs.
